REG/ ENPI EAST- CBC FOOTBALL BRINGS PEOPLE CLOSER ACROSS BORDERS

Football has brought people closer across the border areas of Estonia and Russia. Two football tournaments were organised in the renovated football grounds at Narva (Estonia) involving also youth teams from Pechory across the border in Russia, while the FC Tartu youth team had a training camp at the revamped Pechory stadium. These are among the results of the EU-funded project "Cross Countries through Football", organised within the framework of the Estonia-Latvia-Russia Cross Border Cooperation Programme.
 
During the lifespan of the project – which started in 2012 and was completed last May – a new artificial football turf was installed in the Narva Kalevi stadium, while the grass pitch in Pechory was replaced with a new one. Different youth championships were also organised, hosting teams of the two communities. “This cross-border project has brought a new football wave to Pechory,”  says Dmitri Sopotov, sport administrator of Pechory region: “the new field has attracted many youngsters and the coaching lessons delivered by Estonian coaches were a big help and a motivation for our coaches and teachers."
 
The Estonia-Latvia-Russia CBC Programme has supported 49 cross-border cooperation projects in the programming period 2007-2013. Its objective is to promote joint development activities for the improvement of the region’s competitiveness by using its potential at the crossroads between the EU and Russia.
